Caisteal Uisdein (Hugh's Castle)
A wet and very windy day. It was tempting to stay in our cosy cottage, but we forced ourselves out for a short walk. We walked along the coast from Cuidrach, we were blown to the castle but then struggled back!
The castle dates from the seventeenth century, the entrance was via a ladder to the first floor, so now there is only a single window at ground floor level. A rather small window at that, so we contented ourselves with just peering in. It was built by Hugh MacDonald, a rival to the clan chief, his uncle Donald Gorm, who lived at Duntulm castle. Hugh hatched a plot to kill his uncle at Caisteal Uisdean but mixed up a letter to Donald with another to his hired assassin! Warned of the plot, Donald imprisoned Hugh in Duntulm Castle's dungeon, feeding him only salt beef through the hole in the roof and giving him no water. It must have been a horrible death!
