Day 326/24. The Gun Deck, HMS Warrior, Portsmouth.
HMS Warrior is a 40-gun steam-powered armoured frigate built for the Royal Navy in 1859–1861. The sail and steam driven Warrior was the first armour-plated, iron-hulled warship of the Royal Navy, and was built in response to France's launching in 1859 of the first ocean-going ironclad warship, the wooden-hulled Gloire.
For 30 years, HMS Warrior was the most powerful warship in the world. In all of those 30 years she never fired a single shot in anger.
A real innovation in design, HMS warrior could fire a broadside without listing. Warrior had a two-cylinder trunk steam engine driving a single propeller using steam provided by 10 huge rectangular boilers.
See second image today for an outside shot and one of the huge boilers.
HMS Warrior is on display in the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth and all of her decks are beautifully restored and open.
