Today is a national holiday in tribute to Zumbi dos Palmares. Zumbi was the leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, which was located 350 km from here, in the state of Alagoas. The Quilombo was a hiding place for runaway slaves in Brazil.
He was betrayed, captured by the Portuguese and murdered on 11/20/1695.
The abolition of slavery only occurred in Brazil in 1888.
