Ballycommane Boulder Burial

An adventure was taken yesterday and one of the things I was delighted to find was this impressive boulder burial and stone row. I had searched for it a year ago and just found these but undaunted decided to have another search. I parked in what I reckoned was the vicinity and then spotted a man and inquired whether he knew the whereabouts of a boulder burial. A moment's hesitation then he was most forth-coming,knew of the stones and gave me full directions which involved only a slight trespass, he assured me the owners wouldn't mind and anyway they weren't there. Over the gate, down the boreen and there was the monument. I've been back again today, taking himself with me, assuring him only a teensy bit of trespass was invovled.

This amazing monument, around 4000 years old is probably a grave marker. The boulder is enormous - a huge white quartz erratic. It's flanked by a pair of  standing stones, their tops carefully flattened. This site has been excavated fairly recently and the archaelogist in charge was puzzled to find no human remains underneath the burial - just black silt with nothing organic in it.  Even more puzzling, under one of the standing stones was a tiny cist - a small box made of stones, which contained more silt but no human.  That stone would have taken an army to move! The view from here is fantastic looking out over a valley. Another group of bolder burials are just over the hill. All very mysterious.
And the grass really was that green!

It's just been lashing but the sun has just come out - off for a swim, catch you later.
