'Complicated, Miraculous and Old'

This is the chassis view of a very early tiny transistor radio. At just 3x2.5 inches, it is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand!

It was manufactured by Toshiba in around 1959 and had six transistors! (see extras)

I received it as a teenage birthday present, and both my peers and I found its miniaturisation amazing. My father, who had worked on developing radio valves in his youth, used to admit he wouldn’t have believed it possible and found it almost miraculous!

Though nothing compared to what can be achieved with today's chips, I am still impressed—looking back—by the compactness and complexity of the components and how they are all crammed in to fit together - a step change 60 years ago.
