Another Experiment
Another experiment with my indoor set-up, this time looking at the "Focus Shift" function on the camera itself. Basically it runs through a series of shots ready for focus stacking in other software - you can set the number of shots & the distance between them, though the latter is on a scale of 1 to 10 so there's no way of telling how far they will be apart, and no way of previewing. It's a matter of guesswork & trial & error. I wasn't using the specific macro lens but this one has done reasonably well, except that I set too many shots & the detail of my printed background (slight streaks from my printer!) became obvious. All that was necessary was to run the stacking sequence again in the Zerene program, finishing at an image which had the flower at the back in focus but nothing beyond it. Anyway, the conclusion is that the function in camera could be useful at times, but I've much better control on focus & spacing, with previews, if I use my tethering software. Oh, and that this sow thistle I found in the polytunnel is host to a number of aphids!!
