Failed to land

A strange vacuum of a day.

Mid-morning, we learnt that our Air Tanzania flight had ‘failed to land’ at Songea Airport for our return to Dar es Salaam but that a solution was being arranged for the afternoon. Several hours of waiting later, it was officially postponed until tomorrow.

We all lined up to receive 50,000 Tanzanian shillings (about 19 US dollars) as a payment to help cover costs for the night. My colleague from the UK and I retreated to the same hotel and same rooms from whence we had checked out in the morning, and set about amending our onward plans.

We could not fathom the meaning of this image and slogan spotted on the back of a bajaj. Is it encouraging people to fill their heads with books and learnings? Ridiculing the bookish? It remains a mystery. Any Swahili speakers please pipe up.
