I've managed to reduce WhatsApp's incursion into my watch down to the level of a tiny icon when there's an unread message, but the occasional relayed warning from the oven is quite handy as it meant I had eight minutes to get back home. In the end I was a couple of minutes late after taking a diversion in order to avoid walking behind a lone woman on a dark footpath.
