Ellerburn Church
I needed a break this afternoon so took myself off to Thornton Dale for a short walk up the Ellerburn Valley. This is St. Hilda’s Church. Famous for the bats which stopped services in 2011 as they gained access from the roof into the interior. After much wrangling it was agreed the access points could be sealed off and services could resume.
It is believed this church was built around 1050 although Anglo Saxon and Scandinavian carvings are incorporated in the structure. It was used in the Civil War as stables for the Parliamentary Army horses.
The latest incursion seem to be from Moles in the graveyard
