Three Little Birds
These 'three little birds' were made by Hanne Westergaard, an old friend and wonderful ceramic artist. Hanne needed a digital image of them at short notice, in connection with an exhibition. She messaged me on the off-chance that I might be able to produce one today. I knew I'd be looking after Simone all day on my own, as Richard's away in London for Folklore Society meetings. Simone is chaos on legs when awake, in the best of senses... so this was going to be a challenge.
It all worked out though. I took S for a walk in the pushchair after lunch, and thankfully she fell asleep (it's tiring, being chaos on legs). Hanne dropped in soon after we got back, and we got the photos done in the back garden. With impeccable timing, Simone woke up a few minutes after we'd finished.
Later I drove Simone home. Bob Marley's 'Three Little Birds - as performed by Elizabeth Mitchell and young friends - is a favourite for our short car journeys. After this week of trying to come to terms with the US election results, I was ready for its comforting message. I take that message as a statement of faith, really; not a refusal to see grim things, but a refusal to be defeated by them. Here's a recording of it, from Smithsonian Folkways Recordings:
