The Ice Tower
Dunraven Castle was a mansion on the South Wales coastline near Southerndown. It was built in 1803 and demolished in 1963. The site of the castle was the location for several buildings , the first of which is said to have been built in the mid 12 th century. By the 16th century, a manor house owned by the Vaughan family stood on the site. In 1642 it was sold to the Wyndham family . It passed into the hands of Edwin Wyndham- Quin, 3rd Earl of Dunraven and Mount - Earl, M.P. for Glamorganshire 1837- 1851 through his wife Caroline, and was lived in until after the second world war. This famous landmark overlooked Southerndown beach on the Glamorgan Coast. Originally the site of an Ironworks Age hillfort, Dunraven became the location for a series of houses. Tragic stories abound about the Vaughan family who once lived there, and the ghost of the Blue Lady. The fortified mansion built by the Wyndham family in 1803 became know as Dunraven Castle due to it's grand castellations. Although long gone , Dunraven Castle is remembered by many as a local landmark , and it's walled gardens still exist.
We visited here today and what a revelation. We have never been here before but will very definitely go back. It was amazing. Once you opened the wooden door it was like entering another world. This is The Ice Tower that is in one of the gardens we visited today.
