Jim

The other brother and the one closer to my Mum as they were nearer in age. He was only 22 when they got word he was lost at sea.
Jim was an officer in the Merchant Navy and loved his life. He was torpedoed when he was on the Avila Star but was found by a passing ship on a lifeboat. My Grandmother had been told lost at sea, presumed dead. You can imagine the joy when told he had been found alive. Sadly he went back to the Nairung which was carrying meat. He never came home again. My Grandmother always hoped he would be found on a desert island as he was a good swimmer. Many years later I found the report on line, by the German submarine Captain that said they had torpedoed the Nairung and there had been no survivors. 1944 so near the end of the war.
Both boys are on the memorial at the pier in Rothesay, Edward and James Reid. My Granny would be proud to have seen their names there.
