Motorist's Record Book
Today's the day ........................ for a road trip
I was looking for something else today when I came upon this very old Motorist's Record Book.
It instantly brought back lots of memories of holidays when I was young, when my Dad would be doing all the driving with the rest of the family in the car. I was well-known for keeping a track of the journey in the book and frequently would ask, "Where's the next biggest place?" so I could write it in.
The journey above was when we were returning home from a holiday on Arran on 3rd September,1966. Home, at that point in my life was Hampton Hill, London - so it was journey of almost 450 miles. The roads were mostly trunk roads back then, with a bit of M6 thrown in - but it took two days to drive that sort of distance. As you can see, we stopped overnight in Penrith and then carried on the next morning, to arrive eventually (on the next page) just before 5 o'clock in the afternoon.
Cars were different then too - not nearly so easy to drive - or comfortable. I'm sure my Dad would have been exhausted at the end of it and probably in need of another holiday to recover .......................!
