Soup Kitchen

This week I was at our local Soup Kitchen where Zen Internet CEO and Founder, Richard Tang, was making a small film to highlight how the Soup Kitchen in Rochdale is facing the challenges thrown at it.

Firstly, it probably shouldn't even exist, but it does, and is staffed by a team of around 50 volunteers.

Second, the building it currently operates from is unheated and over 3 floors. Remember those volunteers, most are in or around their 70s...

Next, for 10 years it has been feeding people, but Covid put an end to meals inside, and many of the other services that were available there. Hairdressing, health care from visiting doctors etc...

Despite being awarded one of the last Queens Awards for Voluntary Services, things are just as hard as they ever are for folk. While we were filing this we met Joe who appeared while the door was open. A man at the end of his tether, thankfully who we were able to help.

I'll admit there's plenty of days when I don't give this place a second thought. We do however through work support them, and we got our friends at Zen to supply free Internet and volunteers to help them run the place.

Marilyn and Vida, being interviewed, are amazing people.
