Arizona Dreamin’

Two Hummingbirds

Open in a larger view.

I've been mis-identifying the colorful hummingbird on the right as the Anna's hummingbird. It's actually a Berylline Broad-Billed Hummingbird, a 4" rare and local summer resident of only five areas in Arizona, one of which is my Madera Canyon common to abundant spring and summer resident in drainages of the Santa Cruz River (Patagonia, Nogales, Santa Rita Mts). Most migrate to central Mexico in October but some remain as year-round residents.

The bird on the left is the female Rufous Hummingbird. It's 3/4 of an inch smaller than the Berylline other and is recognizable by the iridescent orange patch in center of throat.

Arizona boasts 18 species of hummingbirds - more than any other state except Texas. I was having trouble identifying them because there were only four in my bird book. Now I know better!

Thanks Google.

EDIT: Totally confused now. Thanks to Alma and arcticory.
