1965: Antiwar protestor sets himself on fire
Quote Of The Day
"I believe that Norman Morrison lit a fire and gave himself away in order to shine a light for the rest of us. To make it impossible for us to close our eyes or avert them from the hard truths of war. To show us a different path."
(Anne Morrison Walsh, widow of Norman Morrison)
I have to say I disagree with Ms. Walsh. When I think of what Norman Morrison did, I see selfish abandonment of his wife and young daughter. There were plenty of other ways he could have opened peoples' eyes.
I had a lovely afternoon at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art viewing a colourful collection of paintings of animals by Ishimura Yoshinari. Absolutely splendid.
I was going to go to the India Club this evening for a Diwali celebration, but my eyes are streaming and my nose keeps running so I'm going to take it easy at home instead. To be honest, I wasn't entirely keen on going; the last time I went it was a fairly miserable experience with too much noise and too many noisy people getting drunk. I can't deal with that even when I'm healthy. A shame not to see the children dancing, though.
