Broken Top

We timed our trip into the mountains tonight for a colorful sunset. After dinner at Elk Lake (ghost chili and jalapeño burger- flame on!) we drove back to catch this over Broken Top. For those of you outside of Oregon, Broken Top is one of several ancient volcanoes that make up the Cascade Mountains, the spine of Oregon. Highly eroded at 9,200 feet, Broken Top at one time was the highest of the Central Oregon peaks before exploding its fury onto what is now Bend. There's your history and geology lesson for the day - darn pretty wildflowers on its flanks at this time of year - and darned pretty clouds over its head.
