Rules for chopping

At the rear of my house just outside the yard wall, there are some small trees which have been getting above their station and threatening some highly strung phone wires.

For a while now I’ve been thinking that these accidental intruders need cutting back, but more importantly what should one wear when cutting back trees?

I opted for a checked shirt with the sleeves rolled up and combined this with some cargo trousers before setting to work. It actually didn’t take nearly as long as I thought and the remains of the tree were cut down and put into the back of Big Blue for a prompt disposal.

Despite the continuing greyness of the Kendal skies, it already felt like more light was coming in to the yard.

I rewarded my efforts with a hot chocolate from you-know-where and crashed out with an afternoon viewing of It Ends With Us, which I found slightly odd and overlong viewing.

Then it was off to The Ambleside Players to watch one of the Panto cast; Ethan, in a cracking play called Rules for Living by Sam Holcroft. Although a single set production, it must have been a nightmare to rehearse and stage as rules (conveyed to the audience through the judicious use of a powerpoint slide) are imposed upon the characters (ie. Matthew can only lie when he is sitting) and escalate throughout the show to a funny and frenetic conclusion.

Ethan was excellent and where a few lines were dropped by others, he was there to keep everything moving in the right direction.

A second consecutive evening of enjoying something new (to me) on the stage!

Getting into this “being sociable” lark…
