Hop, skip and a jump
The morning didn't quite go according to plan for various reasons and the weather was looking good, rather than the rain that had been forecast, so I decided to take advantage of it and escape to the Farne Islands. I have wanted to go for many years and I am in the process of following the story of St Cuthbert, who spent a number of years on Inner Farne.
I caught the 1pm boat and as we left Seahouses it was gloriously hot and sunny and you could see out to the islands. After 15mins on the boat we were in thick fog and had lost all sight of islands and shore!!! That's not the first time that's happened to me, I had the same when visiting Fingal's Cave a number of years ago!
The tour of the islands was shortened slightly due to visibility so we had slightly longer on Inner Farne. I should have come away with lots of super pictures of Terns in flight but I was more concerned about protecting my head, it was a bit scary!! Why is it they have a whole island to nest on but they choose the path up from the boat and then get angry and attack visitors?
I much preferred the other end of the island where I could watch the puffins. With the camera on burst I got carried away and took 1,120 pictures!!! I've just immediately reduced that to a more manageable 90. None of them are as sharp as they should have been considering I took the tripod.
This is certainly my favourite! Sue - this is not in flight or landing, he had been standing for a while trying to work out where he'd left his burrow and then just took a hop, skip and a wing assisted jump over a tuft of grass! [Photo just had a slight crop and adjust contrast]
The mist was inland as well when we returned so I am back at base and will have an evening of processing as I am on my own this evening.
