Dia de los Muertos

Seth flew in from New Zealand today, and he joined Cristina, Evan, Bella, and me for a Dia de los Muertos performance, the movie Coco accompanied by the Orquesta Folclórica Nacional de México. Jetlag made him doze off briefly a few times, but he made it through, and now they can all go home and sleep.

The venue was the usual symphony space, but it felt like a different place entirely, packed to the rafters, bursting with children, every seat taken. The audience laughed out loud, clapped, booed, and stamped their feet. It was wonderful. The movie is about Dia de los Muertos, and we couldn’t believe our luck that the Orquesta Folclórica chose to be in Portland on the very night, conducted by an expressive young woman. Here’s a one-minute intro to the holiday and the movie.

Seth is at home for two weeks before the next leg of the tour. I made the photos in the dark, so I've used Denoise, which erases some detail, but their happiness is easy to read. In the extra I've put a photo of Cristina's Ofrenda, which includes Palesa and Seth's father, and now Cristina's father as well. I am comforted to think that a picture of me will join them in due course.
