DAY OF THE DEAD
Dia de los Muertos is a joyous celebration, involving family & friends gathering to remember & pay respects for family members who have
died. It is often celebrated by the people of Mexico, & those who now live
in the US, including California.
Often families create a home altar to remember the dead. They also
honor the dead with Calaveras, which are an artistic representation of a skull or skeleton. They are decorative, often made from sugar & are
edible. These edible skulls are usually given as gifts to children.
Families prepare traditional foods & often eat at the cemetery, where
they welcome back the souls of their dead relatives, for a brief reunion.
This is the first time I have seen the Calaveras depicting animals,
but it seems fitting to fondly remember pets, on this day.
