Day 6 National Gallery of Australia
Lindy Lee’s sculpture Ouroboros has just been unveiled in the sculpture garden at the NGA. It’s made of stainless steel and was commissioned by the Gallery to celebrate its 40th anniversary. It has been somewhat controversial, partly on account of its $14 million price tag. It’s the most expensive artwork the Gallery has ever acquired.
The name means a snake devouring its tail, a symbol of destruction and rebirth.
Ouroboros is absolutely beautiful. Light sparkles through its 45000 perforations (all hand cut). It draws you in, you don’t want to leave it and you find you have a smile on your face.
