Bridge to Somewhere

In the 1950s Glasgow Corporation had some big ideas. They envisioned roads in the sky, traffic separation, able to move from one side of the city in minutes. As part of that they built one half of the inner ring road (the M8 motorway) in the 60s, the other half of the inner ring-road, the M74 was only completed 2 years ago. They also future proofed for future projects such as the M81 Maryhill motorway (slip roads still visible) and the Charing Cross pedestal, frequently called a bridge to nowhere but it was always intended to be a building it just took several years to finish.

This here was actually a bridge to nowhere. The pedestrian bridge don't have ends linking it to the ground, the proposed housing and shopping centre never built. Only 40 years later it has been finished. The PR people are now saying its the "bridge to everywhere" but actually it links Anderson to Anderson over the M8 and it does seem popular with pedestrians and cyclists. The tunnel section formed by the railings is over the Marriott hotel car park and not over the live motorway, presumably the hotel objected to people jumping onto cars.
