Rockbridge
Tuesday
One of our favourite places to visit in Ohio is Hocking Hills, in the southeast sector of the state. We have visited most years, often camping in the summer, sometimes for special occasions at other times of the year, staying in accommodation. We were thinking it seemed a long time since we’d been, and checking into my blips, discovered it was in February of last year. It looks magnificent in the Fall/autumn, so we decided to pay a visit. It’s possible to make it a day trip, if you get up very early and come back late, but as we get older, we prefer a more relaxed approach, so we opted for one night away - couldn’t really be longer as we’re going up to see Laura and Liam in Wisconsin at the weekend!
So we got there about noon, and headed first to Rockbridge State nature preserve, which contains what’s considered to be the largest natural bridge in Ohio - over 100 ft long and 10 to 20 feet wide. It had been a cool start, but by this time it had warmed up under sunshine to over 70F (about 22C). From there we went on to Lake Logan, and drove along the shore, and finally to Cedar Falls, near where we were staying. As we suspected, after our extremely dry summer and early autumn, the Falls were virtually non existent, just the tiniest trickle falling over the edge, but it’s still a beautiful walk through the gorge.
We checked into our cottage, and enjoyed a cup of tea sitting on the balcony. Unfortunately the lodge didn’t have space left for dinner, so we drove into Logan, and had some pizza.
