Ochi Day

The music I’d heard earlier in the day turned out to be a practice for the main parade which happened around 10.30 where there was a commemoration outside Ayios Andronicos marking the anniversary of Cyprus and Greece’s rejection of Mussolini’s ultimatum in 1940 to allow Axis forces to enter Greek and Cypriot territory. In retaliation Italian troops stationed in Albania attacked the Greek border beginning the participation of Cyprus and Greece in World War 2.

Afterwards I walked to Limni Pier, a relic of the former sulphur and copper mining in the area. Too rough to swim, a good breeze which made it seem much cooler than 27.
