a sad tale

In 1923 a group of 14 ladies set up Beadnell WI, and in 1925 started to build this Hall, or "hut" as it was then called. The building has been added to, modernised, decorated and refurbished over the years, including recent additions of new toilet facilities, ramps etc. We achieved Hallmark standard recently.

In this our 90th year we were able to report that the building had made a profit in its own right for the first time. No sooner had the treasurer spoken, than the builders, who were redecorating part of the wooden slats, removed one. Sadly, the mess that was uncovered of woodworm, wet rot and dry rot to the actual frame means we have to demolish the building and rebuild within 2 years if we can get grants.

There is already some movement of the wooden floor, and if we do not act the whole building will be moving - down round our ears. It has been a shock to the system to have to start applying for grants and rebuilding, when really us girls just wanna have fun.
