Tangiwai rail bridge

This is the site of a railway disaster on Christmas Eve 1953 in which 151 people died. The bridge, which had been damaged by a lahar from Mt Ruapehu, collapsed when the train started travelling across it. The bridge was repaired very rapidly as it is on the main north-south trunk line.

A little sunshine today between the showers, but it is supposed to rain more tomorrow.
