Wednesday!!

So … I hate that the term “fake news” is now in my vocabulary but we know that Russia in particular deliberately plants misleading or biased news in our news media and false news in our social media. I’m looking at a headline that says, “Huge blow for Putin, Ukraine destroys Russia” right next to “Putin desperate, Russia on the verge of meltdown” next to “Ukrainian front close to collapse.” I know that journalists have ethics and need to check sources and be sure what they write is true or be as sure as they can be. I also know that writing a paper a day is a lot and I have read a lot of inaccuracies about wind power and about things I know about personally. Some of the “news” is actually just opinion pieces. Some are just citing people saying things and technically, someone saying something is true. General so and so says Ukraine can’t possibly survive. Economist such and such says Russia will collapse in the next year. And then there’s the fact that sometimes we are all just wrong. Ukraine lasted more than three days after the re-invasion. Most of us, myself included, were sure it wasn’t possible. 

I feel like the news is doing the same thing with the US election - deliberately trying to whip us one way and the other to get eyeballs. Does it feel that way to you? 

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Finance Corp. announced they are backing a telecom deal for Ukraine of over $400 million, the largest investment in its private sector since Russia’s re-invasion. The new company will improve the mobile network which is important during war and will hopefully increase confidence in investing in Ukraine. 

Ukrainian patriotism is causing a surge in war bonds. The bonds carry the names of Ukrainian cities and towns occupied by Russian forces.

Canada plans to give Ukraine $47 million military aid package that will include small arms, ammunition, and protective gear.
