Clearwing Hummingbird Moth on Bergamot
hemaris thysbe is often confused with a hummingbird because of its hovering capabilities and coloration. this one is getting nectar from bergamot or beebalm. unlike most moths they can be seen on clear, sunny days.
hummingbird moths grow up to two inches long. they have an olive-green body with red bands across their abdomen. tufts of hairs from the end of the abdomen look a lot like feathers. the wings are mostly clear, sometimes with some red near the body.
here is a photo of snowberry clearwing, hemaris diffinis, a simular moth.
