The Road Less Travelled

House on the Hill

All the photos I took today were sadly snagging photos for the electricians’ gaffer, so here is a photo from yesterday pre storm of the woods above our house, that’s our roof down below.

Protected in the bay and with the hill behind us and Bute in front of us, the storm did not seem too bad, happy to observe that even on a spring high tide and with high winds the sea doesn’t breach the road below the house. Those victorians weren’t stupid when they decided where on the hill to build their fancy houses! Which is good because we couldn’t get insurance cover for flooding.

It was beautifully still and autumnal bright after the storm. Unfortunately I didn’t get outside due to a long list of admin tasks: the sofa that was supposed to be delivered which they assured me would come today did not of course come due to things working different ly up here! I spent an hour on the internet and phone before finally locating a delivered box of towels in a garden outhouse that I thought was locked. Then I had to spend an hour Teams call with the accountant learning how to properly code our expenses and another hour recoding all the ones that I did wrongly last Sunday - I had no idea setting up a simple business could be so complex.

The tree cutter came to scope chopping down a dead tree and some Leylandii trees that are blocking the view.

Then the plumber/ heating engineer came to diagnose the issues we are having with the ancient Stanley boiler/ stove. He told us the best thing for it would be to become the anchor for a boat and after a lot of ‘oh Christ’ comments and shaking of head and laughing at what other plumbers had done wrong, he left us in no doubt that we have to start saving up for a new boiler and plumbing system. Not entirely shocked but it would be nice if at least one little bit of the house was declared as nothing to worry about by the professionals
