B.A.C.K. to Basics

Mt. Willey

He’s off to hike Mt. Willey.

I hate being out of cell range. Makes me nervous for both communication with the kids/family and to communicate with Bj on these hikes. Today confirmed that! No cell service in this area. The only way to get service is through Starlink or move to a better service area. Mace and I were getting horrible service at camp, so we decided to just watch downloaded movies or take walks while Bj was hiking. As discussed and planned, I was at the trailhead to pick him up at 3 pm. But he wasn’t there. I don’t get nervous until an hour passes without seeing him emerge from the woods.

This time he emerged from a cat and I was curious. I guess he was convinced to take an alternate trail down, but came out 5 miles up the road from the trailhead. Without cell service, we were unable to communicate. So another hiker picked him up and brought him to me.

Thankful for the ride. We vowed to pay it forward when we got the opportunity.

** Update: we did pay it forward. In September when BJ hiked Mt Isolation, there was a young man who had done the same thing - came out on a trail different from where his car was parked. We happily have him a ride to the Pinkham Notch visitor center. Then BJ told me a story about an older couple he met on the trail that said they were doing the same thing as the young man had done. Immediately we knew we needed to head to that trailhead and find that couple. We did and they were very grateful for the 5 miles ride back to their car.
