Bayard's Cove Fort - Hunter's Moon Tide

After a very wet drive on the Motorways from Cumbria to Devon we arrived in Dartmouth late afternoon and decanted our belongings into the Airbnb we had rented for the week.
As dusk was falling we had minimal time to explore but down a flight of steep slippery steps we found ourselves at Bayards Cove fort. The tide was so high it was coming through the gun placements and the cottages alongside had water lapping at their cobbled fronts. Thus, it is one of six English castles identified by English Heritage as being at risk of destruction due to coastal erosion, worsened by global warming.
Originally it was built in Henry V111's reign as a back up defence should attackers get past the artillery and chain of Dartmouth and Kingswear castles at the mouth of the river.
As we made our way back up and looked up-river houses and boats were switching on their lights, glowing mistily in the autumn damp and reflecting in the rain spangled water. Nice to get inside for a bowl of my sister's venison stew and baked potatoes.
