The mill house and farm near Alvingham Church

I was taken for another tour this morning with G. and B., this time to Alvingham, near Louth. We dropped G. in town at the beginning of the disused Louth canal and then drove to the very small hamlet where B wanted to show me the churchyard which has two churches within it. Both of them are on the site of a much older monastery, which itself was built close to the ruins an an Anglo-Saxon settlement.

Once again B. intended to draw and paint while I took pictures. To get to the churchyard once we’d parked we had to walk across an old mill leet and then through a large working pig farmyard. There were massive tractors and farm machinery being tested and in the large barn we could hear pigs squealing. they must have had a premonition as when it came time to leave a massive lorry was in the yard and pigs were being loaded in to it on three floors. I found it rather disconcerting.

Beyond the churches was a bridge over the canal and I went to look out at the quite flat farmland extending to the horizon. After a while I spotted G. in the distance walking along the towpath. By the time he reached us we were all ready to go to have a coffee and cake in Louth town centre. As we returned to the car I noticed this mill building a short distance from the farm buildings but my camera battery was getting low so I used my phone to record this lovely sunny vista.

In Louth I did manage to take some interior views of the wonderful parish church, which is a magnificent building for such a relatively small market town. I’ve added a couple of interior views of the church.
