Loch Morar
Today's the day . . . . . . . . . . . to be under the weather
But only in a meteorological sense, you understand!
There has been an Amber Weather Warning for wind in force today - which is quite a serious one - courtesy of Storm Ashley. It has actually not been that bad so far. In fact, at times it has been positively nice - but perhaps the worst is yet to come? At any rate - if we make it through the night, - it will all be fine from 9.00am tomorrow onwards.
Back to today though, we stayed local and walked from the hotel along the shore of Loch Morar. Apparently, it is the deepest freshwater body of water in the British Isles with a maximum depth of 310 m (1,017 ft). It was created as a result of glacial activity around 10,000 years ago.
It had a part to play after the defeat of the Jacobites at Culloden when one of the most notorious clan leaders - Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat went into hiding on one of the islands in Loch Morar. He was eventually captured and taken to London where he was found guilty of High Treason - and then executed by beheading on Tower Hill.
One last thing about the Loch is that (much to my delight) it has its own hydroelectric power station, in operation since 1948. It's the way to go . . . . . .. . !
