Witting mines

Finland's second oldest iron mine located  in the forest at Ylistaro Vittingi (near Seinäjoki), which includes circa 20 mining pits of different sizes. Mining in the area started more than 400 years ago.
Some pits were mined with fire-setting (heated with fire and rapidly cooled with water) and some with gunpowder and later with dynamite.
In addition to iron, rhodonite was obtained from the pits, which was used as jewelry. For example, the jewelry box made for Russian Empress Alexandra Feodorovna was exhibited at the London World Fair 1851.
