We are having a short break from the Mekong and tonight are in the town of Vang Vieng on a tributary, the Nam Song. It’s in limestone country, surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks.

 We got here by the new high-speed train from Luang Prabang. It’s a Chinese project, connecting Vientiane, the Lao capital, with the Chinese high-speed rail system. There are plans to extend the new line south across the Mekong at Vientiane, to connect with Bangkok and, ultimately, with Singapore.
