Cardboard Cathedral
After breakfast, we drove down and parked near the Harbour Front . There was a Farmer’s market and we enjoyed a wander round. I bought some honey from one stall adding to my little stash of gifts , which is now taking up quite a bit of space in my suitcase.
We shared the drive back to Christchurch, (stopping only for coffee and scones at Lushington’s Garden centre in Ashburton).
After checking in at our hotel, we dropped the car off and walked back via the Transitional Cathedral ( also known as the Cardboard Cathedral). It was built as a replacement for the original which was badly damaged in the earthquake in 2011. A volunteer at the cathedral gave us a bit more detail. It really is an amazing place , built of huge cardboard tubes, timber, steel, a polycarbon roof and shipping containers. It’s worth looking up the history.
