The salad room aka the greenhouse
It was suggested that I try out grafted tomatoes this year in my greenhouse and as weather and rubbish health meant I was late starting, I bought in grafted plants. I chose my two favourite tomatoes- the staples of many a Scottish greenhouses, Gardener's Delight and Shirley.
There's little doubt the plants are more robust but they are slow starters. The first trusses were slightly pitiful but a few weeks of sun has them really showing off now. The cucumber and the chillies aren't doing too badly either and I have cut and come again mixed salad leaves wherever there's space.
(Forgive the photo as the light was low when I remembered to Blip). The lower trusses look ready to accept some colour so here's hoping.
I love the smell of tomato plants in a sunny greenhouse and washing off the yellowy green stain left on my hands after pinching out side shoots. It is evocative of happy times spent with my father in the huge commercial greenhouses of the tomato farm he managed.
