Iron Pour!!!

Oh my goodness I had such a cool experience this evening. The University of Wyoming Sculpture society had an iron pour. They have been saving scrap iron and today was the day. It is a money making enterprise for the art department. Anyone could buy a sand/resin tile for $15. I am no artist but I wanted to be part of this. I carved some birds and some backward notes (so they would come out the right way once filled with the iron).
Once the tile was carved they sprayed a graphite/alcohol mix onto the tile to smooth out the final little sculpture.
I had a hard time picking my main photo. In this one you can see the tall cylinder in the far back where the iron is melted. Then they filled smaller buckets and carried them to various tiles to fill. I have a number of extra collages because it was so dang cool. Really it was hot and as you can see everyone involved in the pour had great safety gear on. It was really cold for us watching though. The temperature dropped tonight and it is in the 30s. Brrr! I didn't have warm enough layers.
Oh, my good friend Jodie was a part of this. She is the artist I blipped in August. She was selling us tiles and giving information. I will be able to go pick up my tile on Sunday. It will be interesting to see how it turned out.
