Trains and Boats and Planes
Okay, you have to allow a bit of licence here as I’m classing the London Cable Car as a plane, on the basis that they refer to your trip across the Thames as a “flight”. Down below you can see the boat we went on next - the Thames Clipper from North Greenwich to Westminster. And I’m currently writing this sat on the Avanti West Coast train on the way back to Kendal. Apart from renting a Boris Bike (or whatever they’re called these days) I don’t think we could have employed many more forms of transport today.
Yes, we could have just caught the tube from Canning Town into London but, with five hours to fill before our train home, we thought we’d do the full touristy bit. The cable car was only ten minutes walk from our hotel (where I think we may have blagged a free breakfast) and only a few minutes walk from the river boat at the other end. The trip up the river was very pleasant apart from being surrounded by noisy German school kids for most of the journey. I wanted to educate them about the important role played by HMS Belfast in the Second World War, as we sailed past, but was persuaded that this might not have been very diplomatic.
Avanti West Coast went up (slightly) in my estimation yesterday when we left and arrived exactly on time. Normal service resumed today however when we were advised there would be no catering available until Preston, due to lack of staff.
Good job the tickets were fairly cheap, especially after the Senior Railcard discount. Would still have liked a cup of tea though…
