St Germains Churchyard
St Germains was one of the oldest in Cleveland, now all that remains is the tower. Several iterations have been here over the years, the earliest probably dating from about 550-850AD.
The bottom half of the tower is either from Saxon or Norman times. But what a view out to sea eh? The churchyard has the remains of James Cook snr, and although I had a good walk around I couldn’t see the headstone.
Another visit another time maybe. The tower, unsurprisingly, was used as a prominent local landmark for sailors. And the graveyard contains the bodies of sailors and passengers who drowned at sea, often on Redcar Rocks which it overlooks.
I had a short walk along the perimeter path which I believe is part of the Cleveland Way. Lots of people walking on the beach and I had a good view in both directions.
Been meaning to visit for some months now after I saw a post on social media, so glad I did today as it was beautiful and serene.
