Chester Rows

I stopped overnight near Chester, so took the opportunity to head into the city for the morning. My last visit was similarly part of an overnight stop, though this time while heading up to The Lakes. On that occasion it was in winter and was cold and poured with rain.

Today the threatened rain held off and I managed to visit the cathedral and walk the City Walls, the oldest, longest and most complete in Britain, parts of which were built by the Romans and are almost 2000 years old.

However, one of the main draws are the black and white buildings and The Rows, the unique continuous half-timbered galleries, reached by steps, forming a second row of shops above those at street level. Some date from the 13th century while others are Victorian copies which together give Chester its character.
