I See No Sea
After the regret of being home again after 9 weeks of holidaying in Orkney, at least the weather has tried hard to welcome me. The sun has been shining all day making the feel like temperature of 5° almost tolerable. It was quite a shock to the system to realise that gloves are required and the mild weather of late is probably over for this year. The hatches will have to be battened down again.
At 6:30 am, as well as wondering if my central heating had kicked in, I found myself wondering if the Hamnavoe ferry had left the port. I’ve no doubt I will look at my watch about 8:15pm and hope that the same ferry is slipping back into Stromness.
I missed walking along to the slip this morning and having my daily dip. Goodness knows when I will gird my loins (or really un gird them) again to get down to Porty. It’s not the same!
My view out of my window as I sit and write this is coloured green, green grass, green trees and lots of students making their way across the greeness to lectures. I miss the view of restless water and boats sailing past.
I only met one neighbour when I was out shopping and waved to another one when I stopped for a coffee. That is quite a difference from the number of people I would hail when I ventured out on to the Street in Stromness.
However on the positive side I will meet all my family for a lunch on Saturday which I would never be able to do living on an island up north. I’m clutching at positive straws at the moment but I know that soon things will settle down and I will be looking forward to my next Orcadian visit.
