In other significant street news, the local authority has agreed to enter into a ‘convenio’ to close our private passage way with railings and gates (we pay for that) in return for them paying our lighting, cleaning and sewer maintenance. The area we need to negotiate is the need, or otherwise, to let the public walk through the gates/street during the working day . . . keeping the gates firmly locked during the night. If they cover the services we are likely to agree to some kind of walk through. The gates would be in closed position but unlocked for those daytime hours, with signs up saying that this is a private street, so it would take some cheek to bring your dog in just for a pee (or worse) as they do at the moment!

It has only taken us 12 years to get here, with every bureaucratic objection put in our way by jobs-worth civil servants, close to retirement. The new, youthful director who wants to impress the city mayor has brought a breath of fresh air and realism to the whole matter and, perhaps, has realised the bad publicity angle if we were to lose our patience!
