The Pensioner

At the end of the day

Being in the mood for reminiscing, now that I’m an old man lying in the sunshine, I thought that I should share with you the fact that it’s fifty years to the day since Van Morrison released Veedon Fleece. Surely one of the greatest albums of all time. An Astral Weeks part II if you will. That must have been pretty much around the same week that I pulled on my polo neck and duffle coat, climbed into my minivan and drove off as a first year student to north east Fife.
Though for music all I took with me was a small Grundig cassette recorder, some tapes of Joni Mitchell and an acoustic guitar. Not forgetting a Bob Dylan songbook. My Dad was worried such things would distract me from my studies, but being a wise old head he knew that it was out of his hands by then. It got worse - I soon developed a taste for Led Zeppelin. But that’s a shameful tale for another day.
