Partial eclipse of the moon
There was a partial eclipse of the moon this morning and I got up at 3am to view it. This can only happen at a full Moon, when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, but it doesn't happen every month, because the Moon's orbit around the Earth is tilted slightly out of the plane of the Earth's orbit round the Sun and, usually, the Earth's shadow misses the Moon. But sometimes they are in line and the Earth's shadow hits the Moon, giving rise to an eclipse. This one was not full-on though, the Earth's shadow only clipped the edge of the Moon, at about 1 o'clock in the photo. A total eclipse, when the Moon is completely covered by the Earth's shadow is much more spectacular, because the Sun's rays refract through the Earth's atmosphere and are bent so that they still hit the Moon, but usually with a beautiful subdued russet red colour rather than the stark white of a normal full Moon.
