You know when Spring has sprung…..

…..when you see the first snake in the grass (that’s it in the thumbnail if your eyesight is good enough). We were out on a motorbike lesson when isbi almost ran over it - I can imagine her reaction if it had wrapped itself around the foot peg!
It was a smaller than average red bellied black snake - they’re quite common around here in the season and quite venomous (but not deadly for humans). They were responsible for the majority of the snake bites I treated in veterinary practice with a survival rate of not much over 50% due to the time delay. Survival was much better when the owner had seen the dog bitten so we could treat it before the onset of severe symptoms.
