Speckled Woods seem to be the only butterflies that are relatively common here at the moment and ivy flowers are a good source of nectar for them.
The Big Butterfly Count in Scotland this summer showed a large reduction in numbers compared to 2023 with only five species showing an increase on last year. The speckled woods increased by 67% whereas the red admirals and small tortoiseshells decreased by 79% and the peacock butterfly decreased by 94%. There are calls to do as much as Europe has done and ban toxic neonicotinoid pesticides on farmland, as they also affect the wild plants growing at field edges, resulting in butterflies and moths drinking contaminated nectar and their caterpillars feeding on contaminated plants.
