Pitsligo Castle
The oldest part of the castle, tower house on the right was built with walls about 2 metres thick around 1424. It was originally 4 storeys high, the kitchen was on the ground floor and a dormitory on the upper floor had 24 beds.
The 16th and 17th century extensions are on the right - these were palatial rather than defensive. The castle was sacked by Hanoverian troops following the 1745 Jacobite Rising Alexander,4th Lord Forbes of Pitsligo was one of the most prominent Jacobites in the North East but escaped capture by living out the remainder of his life as a fugitive - largely on his former estate and aided by his tenants.
