A plant that needs lots of room...

I've always wanted to grow a Cardoon (or artichoke thistle), and this year it's over 5 foot high and flowering, and looks spectacular.  It's native to Mediterranean regions and is apparently adapted to dry climates - that doesn't sound like Cumbria!
